The Tabi Loafers from Maison Margiela reinterpret a classic leather loafer through one of the house’s most recognizable design codes. Crafted in black brushed calfskin, the silhouette features the signature Tabi split toe, first introduced in the Maison’s debut collection in 1989 and inspired by traditional 15th-century Japanese socks. An apron-style construction defines the upper, while the signature four white stitches at the back provide a discreet house marker.
The structured leather upper is grounded by a chunky cleated rubber sole, creating a substantial contrast with the refined brushed finish. A 3.5 cm block heel adds subtle elevation, while ovine leather lines the interior for a smooth finish. The anti-slip outsole reinforces the functional character of the design without compromising its distinctive proportions.
Maison Margiela challenges conventional luxury through anonymity, deconstruction, and unexpected interpretations of familiar forms.
The Tabi Loafers transform traditional footwear through the house’s archival split toe and substantial contemporary proportions.
