Sonia Rykiel

Colorful knits since 1968

Sonia Rykiel (1930-2016) is one of the biggest and most important personalities in the history of international fashion. Rykiel’s success began around 1968 when Francoise Hardy and Audrey Hepburn fell for Rykiels colorful knits, which were sold in a Parisian boutique called Laura at that time. Later that year, Rykiel opened her first flagship store in Paris.

An important movement: Rykielism

In 1968, Sonia Rykiel created her first iconic turtleneck sweater, which was easy to recognize due to its high neck, figure-hugging shape and often striped print. The sweater got its name because of its ability to expose the natural shape of the female body. Sonia Rykiel also became known for founding her own sociological and stylistic movement – Rykielism – which was all about living in freedom and being oneself, all as an ode to women's sensuality and intelligence.
